Kevin Bacon's Family Movie Premiered at SXSW — Shot Outside Austin, Seeking Distribution

A week ago, Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick brought their actual family to SXSW and screened a movie about their actual family making a horror movie. It premiered Friday the 13th. Bacon was in the original Friday the 13th. Yes, they planned it that way.

What It Is

Family Movie is a meta horror comedy co-directed by Bacon and Sedgwick — their first time co-directing. It stars both of them plus their real-life children, Sosie Bacon (Smile) and Travis Bacon, playing a family making a low-budget slasher film on a farm. A body turns up on set. They cover it up to keep filming.

It runs 81 minutes. The supporting cast includes John Carroll Lynch, Jackie Earle Haley, Liza Koshy, Andrea Savage, Austin Amelio, Scoot McNairy, and Nathaniel Woolsey. Travis Bacon composed the score. All the phone footage in the film was shot by Koshy herself on a Google Pixel.

The Texas Connection

The film was shot outside Austin and in Round Top, a small town about 80 miles east of the capital. Bacon was spotted in Round Top during production in late June 2025. Legacy Casting posted open calls for extras during the shoot — townsfolk, death metal fans, and a photo double for Austin Amelio.

The Bacon-Sedgwick family farm where they normally make home videos is in New England, but they came to Texas to shoot the movie version. That's what the incentive program is supposed to do.

SXSW Reception

The film debuted at SXSW on March 14 to what Variety described as "massive applause and loud laughter." The Q&A leaned into the meta: Koshy joked she genuinely feared for her life on set, given that the family really does live on a farm and the whole thing was uncomfortably close to real.

The credits roll over actual home videos of the Bacon family through the years — from Sosie and Travis as babies to pandemic-era dance videos. It earned its laughs and its sentimentality.

Distribution Status

Family Movie is currently seeking distribution. No deal has been announced as of this writing. For a Texas-shot film with name talent, a tight runtime, and a crowd-pleasing SXSW debut, the window is open. Watch for acquisition news.

Why This Matters for Texas

Texas-shot films that play major festivals and land distribution deals are the proof of concept the incentive program needs. The state can talk about $1.5 billion in funding all day, but what moves the needle is visible, successful productions that were made here.

Family Movie is a small film with big names. If it finds a home — theatrical, streaming, or hybrid — it joins the growing list of productions that chose Texas over LA, Georgia, or New Mexico. And it reinforces Austin's position as a production-friendly city for indie film, not just a festival city.
